Clarifying Roach Rumors at EAHS

Is there a roach infestation at Elizabethtown Area High School, as is being reported on social media?

At this time, there is no evidence of a roach infestation at Elizabethtown Area High School. However, in response to a recent report, we have contacted our pest management provider, Western Pest Management, to conduct a thorough inspection and provide any necessary treatments.

A student reported seeing six black roaches in the locker room today (Friday, April 25, 2025)—four were dead and two were alive. While any bug in a school setting is understandably unpleasant and unsettling, occasional sightings can occur—especially in large buildings like ours with numerous entry points and high levels of activity during and after the school day. It’s important to clarify that the bugs observed were not German roaches, which are commonly associated with infestations. These were black roaches, typically outdoor insects that sometimes find their way inside.

Rest assured, Elizabethtown Area School District maintains a proactive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in all buildings. This program includes monthly inspections and the safe placement of preventative traps. When any pest activity is observed or reported, our contracted provider—Western Pest Management (serving all schools except Bainbridge)—is immediately notified to conduct targeted treatment in the affected area. Bainbridge Elementary is serviced by Ehrlich Pest Control.

Consistent with best practices in school environments, general application of chemical pest control products, including pesticides and insecticides, is not part of our approach due to the potential health impacts on students and staff. Instead, our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program focuses on safety, prevention, and targeted responses.

Following the report today, Western Pest Management has been contacted and will be on-site on Saturday, April 26, 2025, to perform a thorough inspection of the building while students and staff are not present. Targeted chemical treatment will be applied in the locker room and in any other areas identified as needing attention during the inspection.

More information on our IPM plan can be found by clicking the link below. We appreciate students reporting concerns so they can be addressed promptly and safely.
