Students from Bainbridge and East High Street Elementary Schools recently participated in the Hour of Code, a global initiative to introduce young learners to the world of computer programming. This event, held during Computer Science Education Week in early December, emphasized the growing importance of coding in today's digital era.
Led by Debra Painter, elementary technology education teacher, students engaged in hands-on coding activities and created their own programming projects. The event was enriched by the expertise of Tim Haak from Mile6, Tara Gensemer from Resultant, and members of the EASD IT department and District leadership team, including Dr. Karen Nell, superintendent of schools; Dr. Daphne Kirkpatrick, assistant superintendent; and Richard Schwarzman, assistant to the superintendent.
Elementary students tackled coding exercises such as CodeMonkey, Coding with Legos, BotLogic, and Kodable Maze Maker. These interactive activities introduced them to coding fundamentals and highlighted how coding nurtures persistence, sharpens problem-solving abilities, and fuels creativity.
The Hour of Code celebration reinforced the District's dedication to equipping students with essential 21st-century skills, empowering them to excel in an increasingly technology-driven world.
