Bainbridge Elementary School recently held its annual Fable Olympics for first graders, an event that wrapped up the school’s study of fables and fairytales through the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum.
CKLA is an English Language Arts program that combines phonics with content-rich units covering history, science, and classic literature. The Fable Olympics gave students a chance to put what they learned into action through fun, hands-on activities.
During the event, students rotated through imaginative stations, each inspired by a different fable:
- Don’t Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch – Based on The Milkmaid and Her Pail, students raced while balancing a bucket on their heads.
- Don’t Be Greedy – Inspired by The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs, participants carefully carried a plastic egg on a spoon, aiming to deliver it to a nest without dropping it.
- Don’t Get Sour Grapes – From The Fox and the Grapes, students took a running leap to reach grapes suspended on a vine.
The event reinforced lessons from the CKLA curriculum while also encouraging teamwork and physical activity.
The event was coordinated by first grade teachers Samuel Cable, Jen Gerber, and Rebekah Yeager.
