Bainbridge Elementary School recently held its inaugural Fable Olympics for first graders, a spirited event that culminated the school's exploration of fables and fairytales through the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum. This new English Language Arts program at the elementary level is designed to enhance students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while fostering a knowledge-based learning environment.
The CKLA curriculum combines structured phonics with content-rich units that expand students' understanding of essential topics, including history, science, and classic literature. The Fable Olympics provided a fun and engaging way for students to apply what they learned about fables while participating in exciting challenges.
During the event, students rotated through four imaginative stations, each inspired by a different fable:
- Don't Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch: Based on The Milkmaid and Her Pail, students balanced a bucket on their heads as they raced from the start to the finish line.
- Don't Be Greedy: Inspired by The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs, participants carefully carried a plastic egg on a spoon, aiming to deliver it to a nest without dropping it.
- Don't Get Sour Grapes: Drawing from The Fox and the Grapes, students took a running leap to touch a batch of grapes suspended in the air on a vine.
- Escape from Mr. McGregor: Based on The Tale of Peter Rabbit, this station involved a game of freeze tag where students had to avoid being tagged by a pool noodle wielded by the "Mr. McGregor" player.
Fable Olympics reinforced the lessons learned through the CKLA curriculum but also fostered teamwork, physical activity, and creativity among students. Bainbridge Elementary School is proud to support a curriculum that enhances students' educational experiences while making learning enjoyable.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the parent volunteers who supported the different stations. Your dedication and support were instrumental in making this event a success!
